With gasoline prices going up by the day, you need to squeeze every mile out of each gallon.
One way to do that: Stick to the speed limit and drive smoothly. Higher speeds burn more fuel.
The auto experts at Consumer Reports measured mileage while driving at 55, 65, and 75 miles-per-hour in a Nissan Altima and Toyota RAV4.
They found that slowing from 75 to 65 mph boosted fuel economy 6 to 7 miles per gallon. Going from 65 to 55 mph delivered another 6 to 8 miles per gallon.
Put another way: When it comes to gas consumption, Consumer Reports found that slowing from 75 to 55mph is like moving from a large SUV to a compact car.
Aerodynamics can also improve mileage. At highway speeds, more than 50% of the engine power goes to overcoming aerodynamic drag.
Don’t add to that by carrying unneeded things on the roof. Remove roof racks when they’re not being used. CR’s test show that even an empty roof rack creates more drag.
