Consumer Reports says one of the best options for a tight budget is a Chromebook. While not lightning fast, Chromebooks – like the Samsung Galaxy Chrome 2 and the HP Chromebook –are perfect for schoolwork.
“They’re generally less expensive than Mac and PC laptops,” said Nicholas De Leon, who reports on laptops for Consumer Reports. “They’re not the fastest computers out there, but for kind of every-day stuff — browsing the web, editing documents, that type of thing, you know, school/work type of stuff — they’re totally fine.”
If you want something more powerful and can afford a little more, CR suggests the Microsoft Surface Go Laptop 2 with a 12.4-inch touchscreen. It was one of the fastest models in CR’s ratings for web browsing and editing text documents.
The Acer Swift 3 is a CR Best Buy. It scored excellent for portability, performance, and display. The battery life is more than 23 hours.
